I duck under the plank and am almost instantly enveloped in darkness. I take a few steps down, which seem stable enough. I wait for them to pass. But as my eyes acclimate to the darkness again I start to see more clearly, and I remember their torch. I take a few more steps down.

I start to think that of COURSE they’ll search down here. I mean it is the obvious move, isn’t it The one place that stands out to hide in? I start to climb back up when I see the flare of approaching torchlight on the wall above me. Swearing under my breath, and feeling dangerously exposed, I go back down, a little further than I had before. And the last step… isn’t there.
